Mt. Joy London Concert reviews
Made MSG feel intimate
I'll start with my favorite opener of the past few years, Mr Gary Clark Jr and his band from Austin. It was an early show for a Friday night in NYC, but you could tell that people made a point of getting to their seats in time to catch this opener. The band was tight, Gary's solos were electric, and people were up on their feet and singing along; these boys ROCKED it. I've seen these boys play intimate clubs with a max capacity in the hundreds and was admittedly a little worried about seeing them at MSG. That's a big space to fill. Something tells me this won't be the last time I see these boys play The Garden.
Now for Mt. Joy. They started their set with Charmer from Because of the Times, and it was clear from the get-go that this was going to be a special show. Being their first full stadium tour, KOL went all-out with videography and lighting. Caleb was in top form, and the band was completely in unison, highlighting their entire anthology with hit singles and fan favorites. The boys received appreciative cheers with every single song's kickoff riff, representing the old sound from their earlier albums along with the anthems we have all grown to know and love. I've seen the Followill boys a few times, including scenic outdoor venues, festival sets, and high capacity venues, but this was by far the best performance I've seen from them. The creativity behind the graphics was phenomenal, and while completely diverse, extremely fitting for the song that it was paired with. The encore was even perfect, suitably finishing off the Valentine's Day set with a sing-along rendition of Sex on Fire.
